In the Brentwood Division 2 League match on Monday 10th August HPBC might have expected an easy match and maximum points against bottom of the table Warley Hill, but nothing in bowls is ever quite as it would seem.
For Warley Hill it did not start well when they gave up 2 points and 10 shots arriving at HP green with only three rinks.
Dennis Ray’s triple went into an early lead and were 5 – 1 up after 5 ends but then Warley Hill came back at them and after 9 ends they were 7 – 6 down. HP then had a few disastrous ends and they were 13 -7 behind after 13 ends, having lost 4 shots. Finally they all got their act together and after making a 4 and a 3 they led 15 -14 going into the final end. However they lost by a single shot on this end giving a draw of 15 all.
Alan Sier’s triple struggled against a good Warley team and were always behind and they led HP by 13 to 6 with only 4 ends to go. Suddenly in the gathering gloom Alan team came back at Warley and they made a 3 on the final end to give an honorable draw.
In the meantime Ken Kemish’s triple had fallen behind, to be down 6 to 1 at 4 ends, but they fought back strongly to lead 8 to 7 at 9 ends. Then thoughts of an early supper beckoned and they ran away with the final 6 ends gaining 13 shots to none by their opponents to win by 14 shots.
