Hutton Poplars suffers early setback to promotion hopes.
Despite the fact that it is still very early in the season HPBC suffered a serious setback in the Brentwood B League on match on Monday 8th June. The occasion was the 4th match of the season which was a home match verses Ingatestone. Going into the match HPBC were lying a good second in the league and playing well. All the rinks made a good start, with Alan's triple gaining two fours. Keith was behind in the early ends but an eight brought them a fine addition to their score. Dennis was in a tight match.
At the half way point HPBC led in 3 matches and was drawing in the other. The scores at this point of 9 ends were: Dennis Ray. 8 - 8; Keith Painter. 14 - 9; John Coote. 13 - 5; Alan Sier. 10 - 5
However things began to go wrong in the second half of the match. Dennis was fighting on but slowly began to drop behind. Keith and John were still in the lead but the gap was closing. With just the final end to play HPBC were still ahead in 3 out of the 4 matches and also had the overall score and thus a 7 point league score beckoned. Disaster struck on the final end. While Alan managed to finish with a 3 and a good win, Keith lost an unexpected 8 to go from 23 to 20 up to 23 to 28 down. Dennis also went down 15 to 24 and in the final match in the gathering dusk John having been 3 up going into the final end, lost 4 shots and went down by 1 shot. This loss also cost us the overall score and the extra point. The final scores were
